Integrating Math and Science
Our next activity will incorporate the Math and Science from the FDK curriculum. The activity within these domain include:
a) Making a chart of predictions from the children. During circle time, you can ask the children questions that are allows you to capture data of the children's answer. Questions as such are:
- How long do you think it will take a a caterpillar to turn into a butterfly? (Using a chart)
- What types of butterfly are there? Using the computer and/or books to search up the types o butterfly.
- Similarity and differences?
- On the graph what can we see?

b) After looking at the different type of butterflies, you can sort and classify the different types by categories the children can think of. Document the children's process and have the children describe the attributes either within small groups or as a class after doing individual work.
Relating this activity to the Full Day Early Learning kindergarten Program Document:
Science and Technology domain in the FDK:
- 1.1 "ask questions about and describe some natural occurrences, using their own observations and representations (e.g., drawings, writing)" (FD-EL-KP, 2011, pg. 115
- 2.2 "make predictions and observations before and during investigations" (FD-EL-KP, 2011, pg, 118)
- 2.4 communicate results and findings from individual and group investigations (e.g., explain and/or show how they made their structure; state simple conclusions from an experiment; record ideas using pictures, numbers, labels) (FD-EL-KP, 2011, pg. 120)
Mathematics domain in the FDK:
- DM5.1 sort, classify, and compare objects and describe the attributes used,(FD-EL-KP, 2011, pg. 110)
- DM5.2 collect objects and data and make representations of their observations, using concrete graphs (FD-EL-KP, 2011, pg. 111)
- DM5.3 respond to and pose questions about data collection and graphs (FD-EL-KP, 2011, pg. 111)
